Biography

Sir Andrew Dick Lauder of Fountainhall, 6th Bt., and of Grange, Edinburgh, who assumed the additional surname of Dick and quartered his arms. He was greatly engaged in the management of his estates for which a great deal of documentation survives in the archives.[1] As with his predecessors, Sir Andrew was also active in civic affairs. Between 1770 and February 1794 he spent £500 of his own money to upgrade the county roads south of the Tyne, which were in “a bad state”, and the reports state that “a similar expenditure may be expected from him for the future.” He also upgraded the roads on his own estate.[2]

On the 14th April 1777 Sir Andrew Dick Lauder was served heir-male of entail and Provision General to his father Sir Andrew Lauder of Fountainhall who died in March 1769. He was served heir to his mother, Isabella Dick, on 28th May 1777; and married (aged 40) on 10th October 1783 in Edinburgh, Elizabeth (c1760 - 1787) daughter of Thomas Broun of Johnstounburn, East Lothian. They had two children:

Agnes, baptized 7th September 1785 at Pencaitland; and Thomas, 7th Bt.

In the archives is a catalogue of Death Announcements between 1779 - 1838. Amongst them is "Sir Andrew Dick Lauder Bart., of Fountainhall, died 18th December [sic], 1820."[3]

He was interred with his wife in the Lauder crypt in Greyfriars Church, Edinburgh.[4]
